Babydoll, Marlborough, N.Z.
It’s the little things in life that count and it’s the littlest sheep that help make Babydoll wines. Our sustainable collection of wines are pure and intense with plenty of character, just like the Babydoll sheep we named them after. These tiny sheep keep our vineyards tidy year round because they’re too small to reach the grapes. Using one of nature’s mowers means our wines are better for the environment and taste better too. Celebrate life’s little moments with Babydoll wines.
Growing Conditions
Vineyard 2019 was an incredibly smooth harvest which commenced around a week earlier than expected. This was due to the consistently dry, warm weather we enjoyed all summer in Marlborough, as well as the lighter crop from the cooler weather over the flowering period. Successfully harvested in good time, the grapes displayed lovely crisp citrus and stone fruit characters, along with the flinty minerality that is distinctively Awatere.
Winemaking
The fruit was harvested from our picturesque Medway Vineyard, deep in the Awatere Valley. The fruit was gently pressed, juice settled, then lightly racked. A long, cool fermentation took place over four weeks with a yeast selected for capturing fresh varietal expression. Post fermentation the wine remained on light lees and was then stabilised and filtered, prior to bottling.
Winemaker Tasting Notes
This Chardonnay from the Awatere Valley is brimming with varietal character, balance and elegance. The nose is lifted and fresh with notes of citrus flower and crushed oyster shell. The citrus & stone fruit characters on the palate and balanced acidity combine to create an expressive, modern style of Chardonnay.
Beautiful with barbequed fresh seafood.
