The Ceres Hill Vineyard has three distinct soil profiles across the property and this Barbera is planted on a block of the famed red, volcanic soil of the Fordwich Sill.
As pioneers of alternative varieties in the Hunter, we planted this Italian variety in 1998, behind the winery. After a few years we worked out how to manage this variety viticulturally and now decades down the track we can consistently make a great wine each vintage. We hand harvest and ferment in small batches with indigenous yeasts, then age in a combination of Italian concrete and French oak puncheons. The wine has aromas of rhubarb and spice. The palate is savoury with bramble and red fruits, tannins are gentle and the acidity is bright.
