Weingut Hirtzberger
Spitz is situated in the most western part of the Wachau, in an area strongly influenced by the chilly winds blowing off the wooded mountains to the north. The wines of Spitz offer extraordinarily spicy, almost exotic aromas, with a particularly impressive terroir
Weingut Hirtzberger is located in a wonderful castle-like 13th century stone building where Franz and Irmgard live and work with their three children. Franz took control of his father’s winery in 1983.
45 percent of Weingut Hirtzberger´s 15 hectares of vineyards are planted with Grüner Veltliner, 40 percent with Riesling, with small quantities of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc as well as Chardonay accounting for the balance. All the Hirtzberger wines are fermented in stainless steel and aged in classic 30-50 hectoliter wooden barrels.
Just behind the house is the "Singerriedel” vineyard site located on steep slopes facing south-southeast which produces one of Austria’s most celebrated Rieslings.
Riesling Singerriedel Smaragd 2022
One of the best vineyards in the Wachau valley, the Singerriedel rises steeply right behind Weingut Hirtzberger. We pay a very special attention to Singerriedel, and have beeen rebuilding the stone terraces here already for 20 years. The reason for our great efforts is the extreme minerality of the soil, comprising gneiss, mica, schist and other primary rocks. This unique terroir provides us with the foundation for our greatest Riesling Smaragd.
