Medhurst Wines: "Estate Grown, Low Cropped, Hand Made"

Medhurst Wines is the realisation of the long held and shared vision of Ross and Robyn Wilson to make wines of provenance from their Yarra Valley property. Each Medhurst wine reflects the site and variety from which it is made and the season in which it is grown.

The Medhurst Vineyard was particularly chosen for its favourable microclimate, north facing slopes, good drainage and magnificent aspect. It was planted in 2000 with chardonnay, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon and shiraz.

With the sole objective of making the best wine possible, careful vineyard management ensures yields are low, averaging two tonnes per acre and providing intensely flavoured fruit.

Each parcel of fruit receives the same care and attention in the winery as in the vineyard. New and older French oak is used after considering the potential for each parcel. The wines that result are released only when they are ready and are of the standard to which Medhurst is committed. At all times quality is paramount.

Tasting Notes

Yarra Valley, Victoria. This wine is characteristic of a cool climate cabernet, elegant and soft with a long finish. The hand picked grapes were fermented on skins before maturation in French oak for eighteen months and then cellared in the bottle for two years prior to release. Beautiful to drink now but could be cellared for at least ten years.

The block is situated in a small valley at the rear of the property on a north facing aspect with a moderate slope. The soil is orange clay with a high gravel content which allows for good drainage. The surrounding hills protect the block from the worst of the summer winds. These factors combine to give an ideal site for the production of cool climate cabernet sauvignon. The length of the ripening period allows for the development of good fruit flavours and tannin structure.
