Bellvale Estate and Cooper Burns tasting wash up

Thanks to all for making WineSeeks Tuesday evening tasting at the Menzies Foundation so very enjoyable. And it was a great range of wines that was imbibed.
From Bellvale Estate in Gippsland John Ellis the owner, winemaker and viticulturist presented his range of stunning wines. We tasted John’s Estate Pinot Grigio 2013 and the Estate Pinot Noir 2012. Plus his superb single vineyard wines The Quercus Pinot Noir 2008 and Athena’s Chardonnay 2010.
From Cooper Burns in the Barossa, Mark Cooper winemaker and one half of the Cooper Burns team showed us his range of wines. Cooper Burns produce small amounts of Shiraz and Grenache from low yielding, premium Barossa fruit. We tasted Mark’s 2009 Shiraz, Mason Shiraz 2011, Grenache 2009 and his 2012 Eden Valley Riesling.
The wines that got the biggest ‘wow’s’ on the evening were the two premium reds, the Bellvale Quercus Pinot Noir and the Cooper Burns Shiraz. And for good reason they are great examples of their varieties and both seriously exceptional value.
Otherwise the feedback as to the pick of the wines from the tasters, not just on the evening but in the form of the orders placed since was most interesting.
A very even spread of likes across the board, with the exception of one wine - the Cooper Burns Grenache of which the least was ordered. This I found particularly interesting as I thought that this wine value for money and a super example of this variety.
My surprise packet of the evening was the Cooper Burns Eden Valley Riesling @ $21 a bottle is excellent and will cellar wonderfully to six years.
Both winemakers, John Ellis and Mark Cooper passed comment on the wonderful group of people who attended.
I have to the end of this month all the wines from this tasting at the special tasting prices.
