Some Awesome Australian Pinot Noir

11 April 2012
There are some rip roaring OZ pinots out there at the moment and I have been sampling some super drops.

The following are my top picks after a month of pinot trials!

Fran Austin co- owner and winemaker at Delamere in Tassie dropped in last week and I sampled her Delemare Naissante 2010 Pinot Noir, a gorgeous drop and drinking a treat plus the Delamere Estate Pinot 2009 one for a few years in the cellar.

The newly released Tucks Ridge Pinot Noir 2010 from the Mornington Peninsula is an awesome drop, silky smooth on the palate with great length and a fine tannin grip, I think four to six years tucked away will be rewarded handsomely.

Bellvale The Quercus Pinot Noir 2008 from Gippsland is drinking superbly, it is our biggest selling premium pinot at moment. This wine will still cellar for another couple of years. The problem is as a number of repeat customers who have purchased this wine have mentioned – it is just such a wonderful drinking wine they cannot keep their hands of it! Note: there is precious little of this wine left.

Storm Ridge 2010 Yarra Valley Pinot Noir for it’s sub $20 price is incredible value, this wine stood up very well in a tasting of pinot’s I recently attended - and it was the least expensive by a country mile.

Lastly a newbie to me, sampled whilst eating out over Easter, the Waratah Hills Pinot Noir 2010 from Gippsland, this wine makes you sit up and take notice. Similar in weight and colour to the Delemare Naissante, feminine in character and light in colour in the glass this Pinot possesses an excellent underlying power and depth of flavour.

Cheers for now Michael @ wineseek
