Casa Gran del Siurana
Two terroirs with personality
After searching extensively for perfect land in the designation of origin area, we decided to purchase two plots of land, which greatly differ in terms of their orography and soil types, in the town of Bellmunt del Priorat.
La Casa Gran estate covers 10 hectares of deep flat land, mainly composed of sedimentary fluvial soils from the river Siurana. The vineyard houses the Casa Gran farmhouse, which lends its name to our bodega: a building with a history of three hundred years that was the former headquarters of the Carthusian monks of Scala Dei in ancient times.
On the other hand, La Fredat estate covers 40 hectares of mountainous terrace farming land with llicorella shale soils, the typical terroir of Priorat, composed of crumbled slate fragments that allow the vines to grow deep roots to make the most of the soil’s nutrients and become more resistant to high temperatures.
Having two terroirs with such different characteristics, in which we have planted a wide range of varieties, is crucial to the winemaking process of Cruor and Gran Cruor: complex wines that are full of nuances.
The Wine
Cruor 2006
The farmhouse locally known as La Casa Gran can be found on the outskirts of the town of Bellmunt del Priorat, on the banks of the river Siurana. It is a building with a three hundred years history. It was previously inhabited by the Carthusian monks from the nearby monastery of Scala Dei. In the XII century, this monasticorder introduced vine-growing into this region, which has become one of the most renowned regions for winemaking in the world today. In the lands surrounding La Casa Gran, lands that previously bore witness to the monks’solemn vows of silence, that’s where Cruor was born. A wine that conveys all the force that is a feature ofthe priorat wines, together with contemporary nuances such as its freshness and elegance.
Cruor 2006 is a blend of Garnatxa (30%), the most typical variety in Priorat, together with Cabernet Sauvignon (25%), Merlot (20%), Syrah (15%) and Monastrell (10%), and is aged for fourteen months in French oak casks (50% new, 50% one year old).
Recommendations: Due to its structure and the fact that it has been subjected only to a minimum clarification process, this wine can contain natural sediments. Decantation recommended.
Tasting note: Cherry red colour. Intense aromas of red and black forest fruits, plums and almonds. In the mouth it is smooth and round, with ripe, fine tannins. It has a fresh acidity. Elegant and well balanced. Persistent inthe mouth, with some strawberry and raspberry aromas.
