Larry Cherabino Wines, the tasting

18 September 2012

Wednesday evening 12/09 I held a tasting of the new releases from Larry Cherubino Wines. All the tasters were more than impressed with the line-up. A couple of our tasters even phoned their partners who were not attending and insisted they come along and taste these wines as they thought the whole range to be exceptional.
In my opinion this is overall one of the best line-ups from one wine maker I have tasted.
From the Pedestal Range we tasted the following two wines
Margaret River Cabernet Merlot 2010– 95 points J. Halliday. A super wine from a great vintage in the West. There are Cabernet Merlots out there that sell for way above the price of this wine that do not come close for quality: Seriously awesome value. The wine displays all of the hallmarks of this classic blend along with the suppleness and the fineness of fine tannin. The oak characters are very delicate and allow the fruit to express itself clearly. Aromas of macerated black fruit (Merlot), with dusty and spicy Cabernet Sauvignon aromas.
Margaret River Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2011. Do not think a glass of fruit salad, although there are hints of passionfruit that's backed with mineral nuances and citrus; accents of lime leaf and juniper. Softly textured with fine acidity. The oak adds fullness to the palate with sweetness and spices. A truly surprising wine that had many of our tasters (who would not normally drink a blend of these varieties) raising their eye brows - and ordering.
From the Ad Hoc Range we tasted the following four wines
Wall Flower Riesling 2012. This wine for me is the best value OZ Riesling available at the moment. Intense lemon and lime with white spice and underlying wet stone nuances. The wine is softly textured with citrus flavours following through onto the palate. The acid is long and persistent with a flavoursome finish.
Nitty Gritty Pinot Grigio 2011. Aromas of peach, pear and lime with pulpy citrus characters following through on the palate. The wine has a soft, generous texture and gentle acidity that carries the flavours along the palate providing length.
Hen & Chicken Chardonnay 2011. Aromas of melon, citrus and minerals follow through on the palate. A creamy mouth feel with a generous palate structure and a clean acid backbone. Complex flavour profile with stone fruit, melon and citrus complemented by savoury components of minerality and toasty nuttiness. A long clean finish.
Middle of Everywhere Shiraz 2011. Very aromatic and lifted nose of blueberry and some gentle spice. The palate is medium weight and packed with juicy fruit, some savoury pepper notes and a fine structure. Full flavoured, textured and complex and totally approachable in its youth. There is sweet fruit intensity, persistence and fantastic length of flavour.
And from Larry’s Premium Range
all the new 2010’s his Margaret River Cabernet, Frankland River Shiraz and Margaret River Chardonnay.
These wines all exude class, from one of the top winemakers in the country. I could waffle on and on about these wines, all three were super, the Cabernet being my highlight of a spectacular wine tasting, up there with the best of the best Cabernets made here.
All 96 pointed wines by James Halliday in the2013 Wine Companion.

All the wines are now available @ WineSeek.

Cheers for now, Michael @WineSeek.
