AFL Grand Final lunch

7 October 2010
For the AFL Grand Final - take two, bro and sis in-law had us over for lunch. Started with a lovely array of dips, pickled octopus, olives and breads which we accompanied with the sensational Rocheford Macedon Ranges Pinot Gris.
Next up was a fantastic prawn dish with an Asian inspired green mango salad and we washed this down with the newly released Bethany Chardonnay 2008. I thought the 2007 of this was great, but the new vintage is an even better drop. This 2008 vintage won Blue-Gold at the Sydney International Wine Competition and was in the top 100 wines. Very well balanced, lovely fruit and not dominated by oak, this wine was a treat with with the prawns.

The main event, the food that is - not the football (as it was a little one sided) was imbibed at half time. Slow cooked shoulder of lamb with roasted vegetables and a delicious gravy. Falling apart and tender as tender, sweet and savoury, it was delicious and washed down with a Penley Estate Hyland Shiraz 2008 from the Coonawarra. An excellent drop, lovely blackberry flavours with a hint of spice that complimented the lamb beautifully.

Dessert was a cheese cake laced with pieces of white chocolate, it was light, lemony, and very rich all at the same time - if that makes sense! A cleansing glass of bubbles, the Beresford NV Pinot Chardonnay was take to finish the meal and drown our sorrows as the team we all love to hate deservedly won the Day.

Cheers,
Michael
